About GearHound
Gear reviews and trail guides for people who hike and camp with their dogs. Written by someone who actually does it.
Who Is GearHound?
GearHound started the way most gear obsessions do — with a terrible first camping trip. I showed up to a weekend campsite with a $30 tent from a big-box store, a sleeping bag rated for temperatures it had no business surviving, and my dog, who spent the night shivering because I forgot her pad. By morning, the tent had collapsed in a light breeze, the sleeping bag was soaked from condensation, and I was making a 6 AM drive to the nearest town for coffee because I did not bring a stove.
I got better. A lot better. I started researching gear before buying it, comparing real-world reviews instead of marketing copy, and testing things on actual trips instead of in my backyard. My dog got better gear too — a proper pack, a real sleeping pad, a harness that did not chafe after 10 miles.
This site is what I learned along the way. No sponsored fluff, no “best of” lists padded with products I would never carry myself. Just honest assessments from real trail time.
What We Cover
Camping gear, hiking equipment, trail dog accessories, and outdoor safety. In-depth product reviews, comparison guides, and practical how-to articles. The focus is on stuff that actually works — not stuff that looks good in a product photo.
How We Pick Gear
- Research first. I read owner reviews across multiple retailers, compare specs, and look for long-term durability reports — not just first impressions.
- Price matters. I compare options across price points. A $40 stake mallet and a $120 one both have a place in my guides, but I will tell you which one I would actually buy.
- Updated regularly. Gear changes. Models get discontinued, new ones launch, prices shift. I review and update guides quarterly to keep recommendations current.
- No sponsored content disguised as reviews. If a post is sponsored, it says so at the top.
